Largest language in the European Union
With about 105 million mother-tongue speakers, the German language is the largest in the European Union, and also the largest in Europe as a whole, with the sole exception of Russian.
German is the official language of Germany, Austria and Liechtenstein, and one of the official languages of Switzerland, Luxembourg, Belgium (East Cantons), Denmark (former South Jutland) and Italy (South Tirol).
